Here is a brief explanation of the difference between W-2 and 1099 technicians. The names come from the IRS tax forms used for each type of worker.
The main difference comes down to the level of control a company has over the worker and how taxes are handled.
Think of a W-2 technician as a regular employee of the company.
-
Relationship: They are on the company's payroll.
-
Control: The company has a high degree of control. It can dictate when, where, and how the technician does their job. The company sets their work hours, provides detailed instructions, and requires them to follow specific company procedures.
-
Taxes: The company withholds taxes from the employee's paycheck (like federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare) and pays its portion of payroll taxes. At the end of the year, the employee receives a W-2 form summarizing their earnings and taxes paid.
-
Tools & Equipment: The company usually provides the necessary tools, equipment, materials, and often a company vehicle.
-
Benefits: W-2 employees are typically eligible for company benefits like health insurance, paid time off (PTO), and retirement plans.
1099 Technicians (Independent Contractors)
Think of a 1099 technician as a self-employed business owner that your company hires to do a specific job.
-
Relationship: They are not employees; they are external contractors or freelancers.
-
Control: The company has much less control. You can specify the final result you want, but you generally cannot control the method or details of how the work gets done. They typically can set their own hours and work schedule.
-
Taxes: The company pays the contractor their full fee with no taxes withheld. The contractor is solely responsible for paying their own income taxes and self-employment taxes (which includes both the employee and employer portions of Social Security and Medicare).
-
Tools & Equipment: 1099 contractors are expected to use their own tools, equipment, and vehicle. We provide our 1099s with our vans, tools and inventory (they can also use their own). They are responsible for their own expenses.
-
Benefits: They are not eligible for any employee benefits. They must arrange their own health insurance, retirement savings, and have no paid time off from your company.
Technician's priorities
-
First priority: W2 technicians who are getting paid hourly, use our van and inventory.
-
Second priority: 1099 technicians who have a percentage of the closed job, but use our van and inventory.
- In case we send 1099 technicians on Platinum jobs, Daniel Szender is the one to decide on how much to pay a 1099 technician BEFORE he gets on the job.

Relevant Techs Schedule is being updated on a daily basis.
-
"Shift Manager updates" for the UA office;
-
"Shift manager updates AZ TX IL" for the GE office.
Read all the updates and leave your reactions to show the person who posted it that the update was transferred successfully.
We usually post the updates on the technicians and their locations. It might help you to schedule the jobs and not send the job to the technician who informed the previous shift about him being sick, etc.
Reminder: Always try to call technicians through Workiz (when it's possible) to keep a recording of the conversation in our system.
Following these two steps will help us keep everything organized and transparent.
